How do landscape professionals tell the size of a tree?

September 2nd, 2010

It has been said that you get what you pay for. Well when buying a tree you will really get what you pay for in size but how can you tell what size the tree you want is? Landscaping professionals come across this problem all of the time. The size of a tree can be told three different ways.

Height is a great way to tell the size of a tree. One way is to measure the tree from top to  bottom which can be hard if the tree is very tall. What do you do if the tree is smaller or you a person cannot reach the top to tell?

Another way is the container the tree is in and usually the larger the container the larger the tree. Some containerized trees are a better value than others but that is a different article for another time. Trees can be measured at the base for what is called the caliper size.

The other way to tell a trees size is to measure its caliper. The method we are suggesting gives you a close approximation of the caliper of a tree. There is a simple way to measure caliper and here are the directions. First you need a measuring tape, and what you are going to do with the tape measurer is to measure from the soil at the base of the tree up a few inches more inches the larger the tree our images show how this looks. You are looking for the place where the sweep of the root area stops on the tree and the trunk becomes a more consistant size. Once you are a few inches above the base of the tree you are going to measure directly across from one side to the other. About where lawn care professionals damage small trees with the string trimmers. You are not measuring all the way around the tree you are just measuring what represents the distance between one outside layer of the tree to the complete opposite side. With this number you have the caliper. If your tape measurer says 3″ then the caliper of your tree is 3″. There is a caliper measuring instrument sold at some landscape supply places and this will be the most acurate way to measure because of the method it uses.

Now that you know how to measure the caliper of your tree we hope you will have more success when talking to nursery professionals about your tree order. Remeber to plant noninvasive species and native species if you can. Thank you and now by knowing the caliper you will truely get what you pay for.
